BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Today is Veterans Day, a day to honor those who have protected our country through their military service. There are memorials, services and celebrations planned all over the country, but one of the nation's oldest is happening right here in Birmingham.
The Birmingham Veterans Day Parade is one of the oldest Veterans Day events. It has been put on for 63 years now.
Civic and community organizations have marched in honor of the men and women who have served our country so well. One of the organizations that has participated for years and will join in again this year is the Salvation Army. You can expect to see their disaster canteen make an appearance in today's parade.
This parade is just one of several events that will be hosted today by the National Veterans Day in Birmingham Organization. Others include a world peace luncheon and a memorial service.
The 63rd Annual Veterans Day Parade will begin at 1:30 p.m. today in downtown Birmingham. It is going to start at 8th Avenue North and 19th Street.
The Birmingham Zoo is also saluting our veterans. The zoo is offering free admission today to active and retired military personnel and their families. To get the freebie, you must show some form of military ID.
