BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) – Gymnastics fans from throughout the South will be heading to the Magic City in March.
The Alabama Sports Foundation, the City of Birmingham and the Southeastern Conference announced on Wednesday that the 2011 SEC Gymnastics Championship will be held at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. This will be the fifth time Birmingham has hosted the event with the last time in 2006, when an attendance record of 7,607 was set.
"We value the partnership between the Alabama Sports Foundation and the Southeastern Conference. With the SEC's headquarters located in Birmingham, along with two outstanding SEC collegiate gymnastics teams in our state, we hope to have an exciting championship for the fans and the City of Birmingham," said Alabama Sports Foundation Executive Director Gene Hallman.
"This is another exciting announcement for the City of Birmingham," stated Birmingham Mayor William A. Bell, Sr. "We continue to utilize sports as a way to brand our city and bring people from out-of-state into our city's hotels and restaurants."
"With the impressive history of gymnastics in our conference, the 2011 SEC Championship is sure to be another exciting one for our fans and for Birmingham," SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said. "We look forward to another great championship event."
Tickets for the 2011 SEC Gymnastics Championship are expected to go on sale in December and will be available at www.SECSports.com.
