PELHAM, AL (WBRC) - By Emily Luxen
PELHAM, AL (WBRC) - Pelham could be the next city in the state of Alabama to pass a ban on smoking. At a public hearing Tuesday, city leaders listened to people's opinions on the idea.
Pelham's Mayor Don Murphy wants to make the city completely smoke free. He first heard from residents and their opinions were mixed. Supporters said going smoke-free would make the city healthier and restaurants more enjoyable for non-smokers. Some restaurant owners were vocal that going smoke-free would hurt their business. Other residents said the city should make restaurants smoke-free, but not open spaces.
The city has not drawn up an official ordinance yet. City leaders will compile all of the feedback from the public hearing and decide what specifics they would like to include.
The city council would have to vote on the issue before anything becomes official.
