The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, November 9, 2010:
27,000....that's the number of jobs we've lost here in the Birmingham region since December 2007. That means…that all of the job growth since 1993 has been wiped out by this recession. Add to that, in one year…from 2008 to 2009 our per capita income dropped more than three and a half percent…two percent more than the national average for metro areas.
How do we begin to turn that around? Blueprint Birmingham…has some ideas to get our region moving again. One area of focus is workforce development. What does that mean? In their words…"The most effective method for elevating incomes is to elevate education levels. How? First…by working to improve pre-K thru 12th grade education in our region…then after determining what skills our region's workforce needs to have, the plan calls for working with all of our area's colleges and universities to ensure that job seekers will be prepared to fill today's jobs as well as tomorrow's.
