Margaret Elementary makes huge donation to Argo food bank

By Dennis Washington

MARGARET, AL (WBRC) - Hundreds of school children in St. Clair County learned Tuesday the valuable lesson of giving back and helping others.

The kids at Margaret Elementary School wrapped up Tuesday a two-week can food drive to benefit the Argo Community Food Bank. School principal Joe Goble said the kids collected more than 2,300 food items, which were delivered Tuesday morning to the food bank.

The organizers of the food bank were overwhelemed at the size of the donation.

"We can't describe it," said Jim Link, Vice-President of the Argo Community Food Bank. "It's really great.  The kids have put forth a lot of effort."

Link said the Argo Community Food Bank, created in January, provides food for needy families in Argo, Margaret, Springville and Odenville. He said donations like this will go a long way in helping people in need.

"Mom and dad ought to look in their pantries to see what is missing," Link said. "We are really amazed at what they are doing."

Two of the school kids were honored for their large donations. Aubrey Panos, a 4th grader, collected 262 cans and Sarah Peoples, a 3rd grader, collected 120 cans. Panos and Peoples said they collected food from family, friends, neighbors, and people at their church.

"Everybody needed food more than we do," Panos said.  "I just said, 'Mom, we gotta go out and collect food because these people don't have enough money to buy the food.'"

"If we help people, then good things will come to you," Peoples said.

Anyone either wanting to help the Argo Community Food Bank or in need of help may contact organizers at (205) 352-2134.
