Handcuffed suspect steals police car

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The Birmingham Police Department is investigating how a handcuffed suspect got from the back seat of a patrol car and into the drivers seat.

The incident happened Saturday in the 2100 block of 13th Street North.  Birmingham Police said Eric Shawn Smith stole a Birmingham Police car after he was arrested for being found with a stolen car.

Police say they are not sure how Smith was able to steal the police car while in handcuffs.

Gunshots were fired during the incident but no one was injured. 

Smith crashed after driving a few blocks and took off on foot. Police caught up with the him around 7 p.m. with the help of the canine unit.

Police said Smith had several outstanding warrants, including auto theft. He now faces escape and additional charges of auto theft.
