BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The city of Birmingham has reached a tentative deal with the Birmingham Barons to move the minor league baseball team from Hoover back to Birmingham.
FOX6 News reporter Ashley Nix learned late Thursday evening of the tentative agreement. The deal follows several weeks of negotiations between Birmingham Mayor William Bell and Don Logan, owner of the Barons, both of whom were scheduled to officially announce the news at the UAB Homecoming pep rally Thursday night.
Thursday's deal follows last week's vote by the Birmingham City Council approving an increase in the city's lodging tax. The extra money would pay for a new baseball stadium in downtown Birmingham.
The Barons have been in Hoover for more than 20 years. Hoover Mayor Tony Petelos had met in recent weeks with the Barons to try and keep the team from moving back to Birmingham.
Mayor Bell told FOX6 News in recent weeks he wanted to build a a ball park in downtown Birmingham near the new Railroad Park for the Barons.
