Hillview Elementary teacher wins "Oscar of Education"

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - A third grade teacher from Hillview Elementary School is now an Oscar winner.

School administrators surprised Jennifer Edwards with the prestigious Milken National Education Award, also known as the "Education Oscar." It honors innovative teachers who are early on in their careers.

The school surprised Edwards with a $25,000 check during an assembly. Though, there was a slight hiccup in the event; during the assembly before the big reveal, Edwards slipped out to the restroom and put everyone on edge that she would miss it.

"When I went to the restroom, I never had that many people that helped me go to the restroom," said Edwards. "So I'm like 'Okay, I can't go the restroom by myself?"

Edwards says she is going to give some of the money to her church then she will let everything else fall into place.
