Sex offender arrested near Hueytown Middle School

HUEYTOWN, AL (WBRC) – The Jefferson County Sheriff's Sex Offender Unit says they arrested a sex offender from South Carolina living within 2000 feet of Hueytown Middle School on Wednesday.

41-year-old James Edward Long was arrested when the Sheriff's Office was given a tip about a convicted sex offender living in Hueytown. Deputies were able to locate the Long's wife at a home in the 900 block of Brooklane Drive and found that Long had been living there for 6 weeks without registering.

Investigators then found Long's place of employment in Tarrant and apprehended him there.

Long is charged with failure to register as a sex offender and residing within 2000 feet of a school. He is also wanted out of Spartanburg, South Carolina for violation of the sex offender act and is expected to be charged federally through the Adam Walsh Act.

The suspect was originally convicted in South Carolina in 1999 for committing a lewd act upon a child less than 16.

Long is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail with a hold for South Carolina.
