Friends remember slain Attalla nurse

By Dixon Hayes

GADSDEN, AL (WBRC) - Hearts are said to be very heavy at Riverview Regional Medical Center in Gadsden after one of its nurses was found dead Monday.

Carla Smith, 44, worked at Riverview for nine years.  At the time, the hospital said she was its supervising nurse over the emergency room.

Late Tuesday, the hospital released a statement to FOX6 News, calling Smith one of its "rising stars" and saying the staff was deeply saddened at her death.

Smith's body was found Monday evening by Gadsden Police in the trunk of her blue Jaguar, which was parked in a lot on Brooke Avenue in Gadsden. The Etowah County coroner said the car had been spotted earlier on Monday and then emergency personnel came back to the scene after Smith failed to show up for work.

Tuesday, police arrested a suspect in the case. Investigators did not immediately identify the suspect pending charges.

On Facebook, friends and colleagues of Smith remembered her as someone who always smiled and never complained.
