Birmingham approves hotel, ball park undecided

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The City of Birmingham has approved funding for a new Westin hotel in downtown Birmingham while delaying action on a proposal to build a new baseball stadium.

The city council, in a unanimous vote, approved funding for the new Westin hotel.  A majority of the council also voted in favor of funding a new baseball stadium in downtown Birmingham, but because the vote was not unanimous, the proposal had to be held over until next week's council meeting.

Birmingham City Councilman Roderick Royal was the only person to vote against funding the baseball stadium.

Birmingham mayor William Bell said groundbreaking on the new hotel will be in late December or early January.
