MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL (WBRC) - By Melanie Posey
MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL (WBRC) - It wasn't your conventional bank robbery that happened at the Wells Fargo Bank off Office Park Drive and Highway 280 Monday. Instead of wearing a mask and pointing a gun at a teller, the suspect went through the drive through lane and sent the teller a note demanding money.
"Basically it said, 'I've got a bomb on the roof. There's another person in the building with a bomb. I have a police radio and am listening to police scanners so if you contact police I'll set the bomb off," recalled Mountain Brook Police Sgt. Richard Pollard.
He says that was around 11am Monday. He says the teller may have thought the man was joking until she looked out of the window. "My understanding is he was wearing some type of harness, supposed to look like a bomb. And some type of item that looked like a triggering device in his hand," Pollard said.
The teller complied by sending out the cash. The robber fled and employees called police.
They quickly evacuated the building and called in Hoover's bomb sniffing dog to search the building. It turned up nothing. But police are still looking for the suspect. He's described as a black man in a white Chevy model sedan with Georgia tags who was heading east on Highway 280.
