Bag of gold thought to be missing in Coosa River

CHILDERSBURG, AL (WBRC) - Panning for gold in the Coosa River is what could happen if one man's story checks out.

Marcus Schrenker, the man who tried to fake his suicide by jumping from a plane over Childersburg, is now claiming he landed in the Coosa River with a bag of gold that's worth $1.8 million.

Locals think it is located on the Shelby County side of the Coosa River. Some fear Schrenker's revelation will bring a boat load of treasure hunters to the river.

Schrenker is spending the next 10 years in prison.
