Commission: no sewer deal anytime soon

By Alan Collins

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Jefferson County Commissioners say they do not expect any sort of deal in the $3.2. billion sewer debt problem anytime soon, at least until the new county commission takes office.

Commission President Bettye Fine Collins said Wednesday the commissioners apparently want to leave the important matter up to the new commission.

"Honestly, it appears the majority of the commission would prefer not to act on anything of any substance," Collins said.

Commissioner Jim Carns, who oversees the sewer department, said talks with Wall Street banks have stalled with the appointment of court appointed receiver John Young.

"I don't think we are doing anything major," Carns said. "I think a receiver being appointed slowed down any global solution."

The new county commission takes office November 10th.
