Man arrested after threatening to shoot sheriff, deputies

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - A Fairfield man was held Thursday for making "terrorist threats" against a court witness and threatening to shoot Jefferson County Sheriff Mike Hale and deputies.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, in a statement Thursday to FOX6 News, said Desmond Pruitt, 29, was being held in the Jefferson County Jail with no bond for making terrorist threats against a witness in a judicial proceeding. Details were released in the following statement:

"Pruitt was arrested in August of 2008 for trafficking cocaine. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant at his residence and recovered an amount of cocaine. Several of his assets that were deemed proceeds for drug sales were seized at this time. At the time of this arrest Pruitt was on probation for previous drug charges. This arrest violated his probation and placed his sentence into effect sending him to prison. While in prison he was named as a suspect in an attempted murder. A warrant was issued. When he was paroled in March of this year he returned to the Jefferson County Jail where he posted bond on the attempted murder charge and was released. The attempted murder case is pending.

"On Saturday September 25th a shooting was reported to the Birmingham Police Department. The investigators brought Pruitt in believing he was a possible witness. He was interviewed by detectives with the Birmingham Police Department. The interview was recorded. During the recorded interview he expressed displeasure with Sheriff Mike Hale, a sergeant and a deputy from the narcotics unit for sending him to prison. He stated that he was going to get an AK-47 rifle and 'shoot up' Sheriff Hale, the sergeant and the deputy. The detectives at the Birmingham Police Department contacted the Sheriff's Office and provided this information. The case was presented to the District Attorney and a warrant was issued for Making Terrorist Threats Against a Witness in a Judicial Proceeding. September 29th Sheriff's Deputies assisted by the U. S. Marshal's Service and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms went to his residence in the 700 block of Sherwood Road in Fairfield to execute this arrest warrant. While
arresting Pruitt deputies discovered more cocaine and a handgun. Additional charges are expected on the drugs and the gun.

"The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office under the leadership of Sheriff Mike Hale has shut down over 450 drug houses in our neighborhoods and communities. 'My deputies will not be intimidated by that kind of threat and will continue to aggressively pursue drug dealers and shut down drug houses,' Sheriff Hale stated. 'To make that kind of statement while being questioned by a law enforcement investigator is pretty brazen and I appreciate very much the Birmingham Police for immediately informing us of the threat,' Hale added."
