Kohl's stores announced Wednesday they plan to hire 40,000 holiday shopping seasonal workers, that's a 20% increase over 2009.
Overall more than 600,000 temporary jobs are expected to open in the coming weeks.
New sales tax figures released today show Alabama's back to school sales for August were up 2.4% over last year.
That may be the confidence stores like Party City and Kohl's need to start adding temporary workers. And for a lot of folks without jobs, any paycheck is a blessing right now.
tores like Kohl's, Macy's, Pier 1, and Toys 'R Us all plan to hire more holiday workers this year. A retail expert at UAB, Mickey Gee, says there's an easy explanation.
"I think one reason we're seeing such huge numbers of temporary jobs during the holiday season is because everybody's kind of cutting back to the bone," Gee said. "And they've got to go out and hire these people if they're going to service this wave of people we're predicting."
The National Retail Federation increased its forecast for holiday sales Wednesday, saying stores should do about 2.3% percent more business this year than last, which could be good news for anyone looking for a job, even if its temporary.
"I think it'd be best to get that temp job just to keep it up and support yourself while you're looking for another job," said John Williams, a UAB student. Williams says some unemployed grads may worry about missing out on a full-time opportunity while they're at their part-time job, but that won't stop him.
"I would make sure if I went to a job to interview, I would make sure I specified that I would be taking some days to possibly go interview, and hopefully the place would accept it, seems like it would be flexible," Williams said.
"I think they should take the job simply because it's better than doing nothing at all," Washington said. "They may not miss out on that opportunity. They'll still get a chance to potentially get that opportunity. But they still should have the ability to earn some kind of income."
"I would go out and get a temporary job," Gee said. "#1 it's great for experience. But #2, go in there and show that employer what kind of worker you are, the skills you have, and a lot of these temporary employees are going to be hired on full-time. Because this economy is gathering steam, these employers are going to look at those employees they hire on temporary slots, and I would say a good percentage of those people will be able to land full-time jobs."
