People return to homes after gas leak forces evacuations in Margaret

MARGARET, AL (WBRC) - Several people were evacuated from their homes Wednesday morning after utility workers accidentally ruptured a natural gas line.

Tom Dixon, fire chief for Margaret, said utility workers hit a high-pressure gas line at approximately 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of Louis Street and Wyatt Drive. Dixon said the location of the line was either mis-identified or not identified by 811, a line locate service.

Seven homes were near the gas leak and residents of those homes were notified and evacuated to a safe location down the street. Just after noon, residents were given the all-clear and were allowed to return to their homes.

Alagasco was called to fix the leak. Dixon said Alabama Power had also been called to help cut power to a homeowner's electric fence near the leak.
