Former Bevill State Community College manager charged

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Federal prosecutors have charged a former Bevill State Community College cashier and business office manager with embezzling $20,000 from the school.

U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance, in a statement Friday to FOX6 News, said Janet Adams Bobo, 55, had been charged with one count of embezzlement.

Vance said Bobo embezzled and misapplied the $20,000 from Bevill State between May 2007 and May 2008. A plea agreement also filed Friday said Bobo began taking money from a cash drawer several years before 2007.

Vance said the embezzlement was discovered in an audit of Bevill State finances by the Alabama Department of Examiners of Public Accounts for the period Oct. 1, 2004 through May 23, 2008, according to the plea agreement. The audit revealed BOBO had embezzled $113,763 from the college. She has repaid that amount to Bevill State, the plea agreement says.
"Mrs. Bobo has confessed to the embezzlements that extended over a period of years and has entered into an agreement with the United States to plead guilty to the information," Vance said in the statement.

Vance said the maximum penalty for the embezzlement charge is 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
