Birmingham police investigate rape, attempted attack

By Ashley Nix

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Birmingham Police are investigating a rape and another attack on two women jogging in south Birmingham.

Investigators said a woman told them she was raped along Altamont Road late last week while jogging between 6:30 a.m. and 7 a.m.  Then two days later, another woman told officers someone tried to attack her while jogging near the Highland Park Golf Course.  She said she managed to get away.

"We don't know if it was a botched robbery gone wrong, that was as far as it got because the jogger did get away," said Birmingham Police Sergeant Johnny Williams.

Williams said investigators are working to figure out if the two attacks are related.

In the meantime, Williams is asking the public to be vigilant, be careful, and exercise in groups.  Williams says if you're out jogging early in the morning or late at night, take someone with you.

Investigators are also looking for any additional information.  If you saw something out of the ordinary last Thursday or over the weekend, please call Birmingham Police at (205) 254-1764.
