Shaunasty Lowe found Not Guilty

BESSEMER, AL (WBRC) - A Jefferson County jury has reached a verdict in the trial of a man accused of killing a Birmingham family.

Shaunasty Lowe was found ‘Not Guilty' on all nine counts after being charged with capital murder for allegedly shooting Derrick and Elizabeth Witherspoon and their two sons in their Graselli Heights home in 2008. The two boys survived gunshots to the head but died from smoke inhalation when their home was set on fire.

Although the murders happened in Birmingham, the trial took place at the Bessemer Courthouse. A jury of six men and six women began their deliberations around 9:00 a.m. and has returned to the court a few times to ask several questions and view some videotaped statements.

Derrick Witherspoon's mother says she is upset with the verdict and feels Lowe is responsible for the deaths.

According to Lowe's defense attorney, Lowe was very glad to hear the verdict and is happy to walk away free.

Lowe was one of two men charged in the case.
