Smith Lake drowning victim identified

SMITH LAKE, AL (WBRC) - Authorities have identified the person whose body was found Tuesday morning in Smith Lake.

The Winston County Sheriff's Department said the body of Daniel Lamar Lane, 54, of Jasper, was pulled from the lake at approximately 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Sheriff Ed Townsend told FOX6 News Lane disapeared Monday while sitting on the bank of Smith Lake near the Duncan Bridge on Curry Highway. Witnesses told investigators Lane was sitting on a rock, trying to reach over to the water, when he fell in. Sheriff Townsend said Lane attempted to swim and could not make it out.

Emergency workers from a number of law enforcement agencies resumed their search for the possible drowning victim Tuesday morning after searching Monday night.
