Stars fall upon Alabama as local filmmakers shoot a feature

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - By Emily Luxen

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - A little bit of Hollywood has invaded the Magic City. There's a feature film being shot in downtown Birmingham.

Local brothers, Jon and Andy Erwin, are directing their first feature film called "October Baby."

The movie is a coming-of-age story about a girl who finds out she is adopted. It stars John Schneider, Jasmine Guy and American Idol contestant, Chris Sligh.

Directors and producers say this is a great opportunity to shoot the movie in their home state. They hope it encourages others to do the same.

"The cool thing about Birmingham is it is Anytown USA," said the producer, Dan Atchison. "You can be down here and it looks like a New York street, and you go 20 miles outside the city, and you've got fields. There are so many locations to shoot."

Last week, the crew shot in Bibb County at Bibb Medical Center.

The film will be shot entirely in Alabama. Nearly every crew member is from Alabama as well.

They hope other directors will see the magic in the Magic City and consider filming here because each movie brings jobs and money into the local economy.

"We would love to bring films here," said Atchison. "The crews are great, the locations are great. It's a great place to shoot."

If you would like a chance to be an extra in the movie, directors are trying to round up 1000 people for a scene at the Alabama Theater on Thursday, Sept. 16.

Participants are instructed to arrive at 5pm and dress as if they are going to a wedding.  Directors will shoot the opening scene and want big crowd.
