Mayor Bell proposes lodging tax increase

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - By Ashley Nix

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Birmingham Mayor William Bell is proposing a 3.5% lodging tax increase to partly pay for a new hotel, baseball stadium complex, and Negro Baseball Museum.

Bell informed city councilors Monday that a minor league baseball team is interested in moving to Birmingham, but he would not elaborate.

Only 3 councilors were present at the meeting. They endorsed the preliminary plans.

The hotel would be a 300-room Westin Hotel near the BJCC.
