TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) - The defending national champions extended their winning streak Saturday night with a dominating victory over Penn State.
The Alabama Crimson Tide beat the Penn State Nittany Lions 24-3 in front of more than 101,000 fans at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. The victory put the No. 1 team in America 2-0 on the season and extended their three-year regular season undefeated streak.
On offense, Alabama dominated Penn State for most of the game. Alabama's offense gained 409 yards compared to 283 yards for Penn State.
Alabama's first score came in the first quarter, when quarterback Greg McElroy completed a 36-yard pass to Kevin Norwood for a touchdown. The next touchdown came in the second quarter when Greg McElroy completed a 14-yard pass to Preston Dial for a touchdown.
Alabama's Jeremy Shelley added a 31-yard field goal with 3:54 left in the second quarter. Alabama led 17-0 at halftime.
Neither team scored in the third quarter, but shortly after the start of the fourth quarter, Alabama running back Trent Richardson carried the ball into the endzone from one yard out to score the Crimson Tide's third touchdown of the night.
Penn State scored its only points of the game with 9:47 remaining in the game, when Collin Wagner kicked a 36-yard field goal.
Alabama ended the night with 19 first downs, 409 total yards of offense, 180 of which was rushing and 229 was passing. The Crimson Tide had possession of the ball for 28:25, turned it over one time, and was penalized five times for 33 yards.
Penn State made 17 first downs, 283 total yards of offense, 127 of which was rushing and 156 was passing. The Nittany Lions had possession of the ball for 30:48, turned it over four times, and was penalized one time for five yards.
Alabama, 2-0, goes on the road for its next game. The Crimson Tide will play Duke in Durham, N.C., on Sept 18. Penn State, 1-1, will host Kent State at home next Saturday.
