Bill Clinton to appear at Ron Sparks fundraiser in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Former President Bill Clinton visits Birmingham for a political fundraiser.

Clinton is the headliner at an event for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ron Sparks. The $1,000 a plate fundraiser will be held at the Summit Club in downtown Birmingham.

It has been a busy week for the Sparks campaign. The news of former President Clinton's appearance in the Magic City surfaced on Monday. Sparks supporters received an e-mail announcing the event over the weekend.

On Wednesday, Sparks made an airplane tour of Alabama talking about education, jobs, and gambling with 2004 Democratic presidential candidate Wesley Clark.

Sparks wants to establish an education lottery to provide college scholarships to Alabama high schoolers. He also wants to pursue other forms of gambling, including casinos, in search of additional revenue for the state coffer.

The Republican in the race for governor, Robert Bentley, has previously stated his personal opposition to gambling, but he says he is in favor of an up or down vote of the people.
