BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - A teenager has been arrested in connection with the shooting of a teenage girl.
Birmingham Police, in a statement Wednesday afternoon to FOX6 News, said Archie Gillis, 17, of Birmingham, had been arrested and charged with felony assault.
Investigators said Gillis was engaged in an alteraction with another person Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of 7th Avenue South and Vanderbilt Street when Gillis fired a gun at the other person. However, the bullet missed the other person and hit at 16-year-old female student as she was getting off a school bus.
Investigators said the girl was an innocent bystander and was not involved in the altercation.
"Obviously this suspect had no regard for human life and the community understood the severity of the situation when they gave assistance to help detectives identify him," Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper said in the statement.
The victim was reported to be in stable condition Wednesday at UAB Hospital.
Gillis was being held in the Jefferson County Jail on $30,000 bond.
