BIRMINGHAM,AL (WBRC) - Birmingham City Councilors today approved a deal allowing developers to go-ahead with a $57 million project to renovate and refurbish the old Pizitz building in downtown Birmingham. The project would turn Pizitz into a mixed office and retail space. Offices of law firm Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz will fill much of the building. The lower levels will be occupied with shops and restaurants. Grocer V. Richards has agreed to move into the ground floor. The city will make nearly $2 million worth of improvements, including sidewalks and curbs. The city will also hold a 2nd mortgage for Bayer Properties on one loan, acting as a security for developers. All in all, Mayor William Bell says the project will be a shot in the arm for the area near 18th street and 2nd Avenue North.
