I received this letter from a viewer saying "Lou, Give us a break…several of us at work really don't like the editorial time on Fox 6…
While many of you have responded, with interest, to our editorials, giving your opinions on the issues we've discussed or offering additional topics for discussion, I do receive an occasional letter or email from a viewer who will either ask why editorials have become part of our news content or questioning why I, the general manager and…obviously not a trained news anchor…do them.
I think it's time to explain.
WBRC, the #1 Fox affiliate in the country and news leader in the Birmingham market produces 49 ½ hours of local news each week. Our local news content is by its nature, factual, not opinion. It's who, what, when, where, and why and it's purely one way…from us to you, the viewer. That's news. That's one side of it. Opinion is the other.
Our parent company, Raycom Media, who owns television stations in 36 television markets and 18 states, asks that we do editorials to engage you in a discussion of the local issues you see in the news. ..we give you our opinions and you give us yours. We want to hear from you…to know what you think.
Why do I do the editorials? Raycom asks its general managers to present editorials in all of their markets, thereby separating opinion from news content.
