Guyton wins re-election as Gadsden mayor

GADSDEN, AL (WBRC) - Sherman Guyton cruised to an easy re-election victory Tuesday night over former mayor Steve Means.

With 100 percent of the precincts counted, Guyton had 74 percent of the vote compared to 26 percent for Means.

Guyton said the vote was clear approval for his work as mayor.

"People like what we are doing," Guyton said. "We are open, there is no arguing on the council. People don't want to come to a city where there are bad headlines."

Means, who served as mayor for 28 years until Guyton defeated him four years ago, thanked his supporters and conceeded on his Facebook page.

"I want to thank everyone for your support and help," Means said on the page. "It was a good race and we had a great plan for the city. However, at this point I need to congratulate our opponent on his victory and I want to wish the best for our great city. Thanks again to everyone."
