Suspected copper thieves arrested

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Two men have been arrested for stealing an air conditioner and copper pipes from a vacant home in northern Jefferson County.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, in a statement Thursday to FOX6 News, said Terrance McCray, 35, and Thomas Coe, 33, were arrested Wednesday afternoon on charges of burglary and theft of property.

Investigators said shortly before noon Wednesday, deputies responded to a burglary call in the 6100 block of Lakeside Drive in the Woodhaven Lakes community of northern Jefferson County. A witness told 911 a gray pickup truck pulled away from a vacant house with something in the bed of the truck. The responding deputy arrived at the house to find the air conditioning unit stolen along with copper pipes and wiring from inside the house.

Later in the afternoon, a deputy noticed the truck leaving a metal recylcer in the Pinson area. The truck was stopped and deputies found the two men with cash and a receipt from the recycler. A representative from the recycler comfirmed the pair had just sold copper to the company, and the witness who called 911 was brought to the scene and identified the two men and the people seen leaving the house.

Both men were arrested and the copper was recovered from the recycler. Investigators said in addition to the charges, Coe was also charged with burglary and theft for a similar case earlier in the week.
