Councilors deny taking money from savings

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) – Birmingham City Councilors voted down a motion on Tuesday to take $1.6 million out of the city's fund balance, or savings account, to use for 3 projects.  Video cameras for the police department, XO laptops and health care costs were the 3 items brought up; both cameras and laptops are under contract with the city and need to be paid off.

Councilors say they are getting mixed signals from the mayor.  They claim about a month ago, Mayor William Bell told them not to take money out of savings.

They are also requesting more information from the mayor about the city's finances, before they make any decisions about the 3 projects.

Bell was not present at Tuesday's meeting.
