Residents upset over A/C removal during heat wave

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Some residents of a Birmingham housing complex are steaming!   They say the Birmingham Housing Authority has suddenly removed their air conditioning units during this record heat.

"Don't take them out.  I need my air!" says resident Alisa Muhammad, whose sentiments are echoed by many others who live in the Gate City housing community.

Neighbors say on Thursday, they got a letter from the Housing Authority telling them that on Friday, staff members would remove air conditioning units that are blocking exits that could be used as fire escapes.  Residents say the rush job is because Gate City is up for a major inspection next week and that management has not put in safety mechanisms to upstairs units that are required by the federal government.

"So they're taking it all out and telling people we just have to be hot until next week," said resident Ravin Brown.  "And I don't think it's fair."

Alicia Muhammad agreed.  "They're trying to hide themselves... they're trying to cover up."

FOX6 tried numerous times to contact administrators with the Birmingham Housing Authority, however no one returned our call.
