Free air conditioners given out for those in need

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - In this kind of heat it is not only uncomfortable, it is dangerous to not have some way to cool off. That is why the Jefferson County Committee for Economic Opportunity is offering free air conditioner units to those in need who do not have one.

The JCCEO has handed out ac units before, but never this many. This year they are giving out 500 units to needy families.  It is all because of a federal grant the organization received.

At the Handy TV and Appliance warehouse, units are lined up and ready to be shipped out.

Not only are they giving away the 500 units, but for the first time the JCCEO is also funding the installation of the units.

The program director says it will help make sure the air conditioners are actually getting used.

To qualify for a free air conditioner, you must meet these one of these requirements:

- over 60-years-old
- live in a home with children under 5
- have a medical statement

You also must meet certain financial requirements.
