Birmingham begins blitz against condemned homes

By Melanie Posey

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Abandoned homes across Birmingham came crumbling down Wednesday.

One of the first homes to go was in the city's La Quemada neighborhood.  That community sits near the Birmingham/Shuttlesworth International airport.

The demolition is part of Mayor William Bell's "one to one" community cleanup blitz that began this week.

"Some people are skeptical saying, 'Oh, we're just going to do a couple of things and nothing will really happen," Bell said.  "We're looking at single family residences, multiple family residences all across the city to take action and clean up our neighborhoods."

During this blitz, the city is expected to tear down about 120 homes in a couple of weeks.  Normally, the city tears down only 10 houses in a month's time.
