BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - It could be a tough day for Birmingham firefighters. On Tuesday's city council agenda is an item that could result in a 20% cut in firefighter pay. It is a confrontation that has been brewing for a while.
On June 29th, Birmingham firefighters and their families protested the proposed cut. It would change the way firefighter pay is calculated and result in a double digit drop in pay.
City leaders say their hand is forced based on a court ruling that requires firefighter and police officer pay to be similar.
The resolution authorizing the mayor to correct what the council calls errors that resulted in firefighter overpayment is on the agenda for Tuesday morning's meeting. It starts at 9:30 a.m. at city hall.
