BPD Headquarters damaged after water main break

BY Melanie Posey

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - A water main break caused Birmingham Police Headquarters to close for public business Monday.  Police officials were notified around 2:30am Monday morning that the line had busted. Officials with the Birmingham Water Works board say the 12-inch line broke due to age.

The spewing water eventually crept into the police building causing flooding on the first floor and the basement.  The break also caused the air conditioning to go out in the entire building.  As a result, most employees were let go for the day, but not everyone.

"We still have staff handling essential business and detectives handling cases that can't wait," Sgt. Johnny Williams said Monday afternoon.  "Even though they're braving the rising temperatures inside the building, they're doing their job."

Just before noon, crews removed the busted pipe, then they began laying new lines.  By 3:00pm the problem had been fixed.

Sgt. Williams says the department's administrative offices will reopen Tuesday morning.
