HOOVER, AL (WBRC) - Florida head coach Urban Meyer says he stands by the former Florida Gator who says he did not take money from a talent agent.
Meyer spoke to reporters Wednesday at SEC Media Days, saying he asked Pouncey about the report several weeks ago.
"I went to Maurkice," Meyer said. "He said that didn't happen."
Published reports in recent days saying Pouncey took $100,000 from an agent prior to the Jan. 1 Sugar Bowl. Pouncey left after his junior year and was the first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Wednesday, Pouncey released a statement through his attorney denying the accusation.
"I did not accept $100,000," Pounce said in the statement. "It is an absolutely ridiculous claim."
Meyer later in the afternoon backed him up.
"Everything I hear, I heard his denial today, and we stand by Maurkice Pouncey," Meyer said.
Meyer said Wednesday he first heard of the accusation five or six weeks ago, and immediately notified the compliance office to investigate. Then, he went to Maurkice, who denied the story.
Meyer said he hopes the issue will be resolved soon.
"I don't like our pictures going across the ticker and everything else," Meyer said. "If something happened, he should be punished severely. If it didn't happen, then that's nonsense.
