Bessemer club in the sights for some city councilors

BESSEMER, AL (WBRC) - A deadly shooting at a private club in Bessemer has some city council members calling for it to close, but the full council is not yet ready to act.

Council Member Dorothy Davidson says closing the club would be the best thing for the city. She presented her plan at Wednesday night's council meeting.

In the early morning hours of July 2nd, Maurice Thomas was shot and killed while at the Gettie Boyz Club.

Bessemer Police Chief Nathaniel Rutledge also addressed the council at Wednesday night's meeting. He says the club did not have a history of problems and the police department will proceed with their investigation regardless of what the council decides.

"It is not the intent of the police dept to go after an establishment right now," said Rutledge. "Our primary interest is bringing to justice for the life of his young man who died senselessly."

Chief Rutledge says Bessemer police have arrested and charged one suspect and they are looking for one more: Edmond Carter of Birmingham. They say the investigation is ongoing and still have two other persons of interest.

City councilors will likely revisit this issue at a future meeting.
