The run down on today's runoffs

MONTGOMERY, AL (WBRC) - The polls open today for the state's runoff elections.

The biggest matchup is one that will decide who will run on the November ballot for as the republican candidate for governor. The battle is between Robert Bentley and Bradley Byrne. Both men have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in the six weeks leading up to this race. Whoever wins will face Democrat Ron Sparks in November.

Another pivotal race is the one for the Democratic nomination in the Seventh Congressional District, the seat that Congressman Artur Davis is vacating. Attorney Terri Sewell and Jefferson County Commissioner Shelia Smoot are both running. They are hoping to make history as the first black congresswoman from Alabama. The winner of Tuesday's race will face the winner of the Republican runoff between Don Chamberlin and Cris Salter.

In Jefferson County, the fight over the District One County Commission seat will move to round two. George Bowman currently holds the seat after he beat Birmingham City Councilmember Johnathan Austin during the June primary. Bowman is filling the seat vacated by now Birmingham Mayor William Bell. His term could be short if Austin wins today. It would put Austin's name on the ballot in November for a full four year term.

The only major statewide race on the Democratic ballot is for attorney general. Giles Perkins and James Anderson face off in that race. The winner meets Republican Luther Strange in November.

Alabama Republicans will also be making a choice in agriculture commissioner. John McMillan and Dorman Grace appear on the ballot. The winner faces Democrat Glen Zorn.

Election officials are expecting a pretty low turnout for today's runoff races. The prediction is based on the fact that the runoff falls during the middle of summer vacation season and it is just weeks after the primary.

The polls are open from 7:00 a.m to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday.
