Sylacauga police sergeant undergoes more surgery

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - A Sylacauga police sergeant who was critically injured in a crash has received another round of surgery.

Sylacauga Police Chief Louis Zook tells FOX6 News that Sergeant Wesley Allen had more surgery Tuesday at UAB Hospital to repair serious bone damage. Doctors also operated on Sergeant Allen to repair internal injuries.

Sergeant Allen was hit by another car Monday on Highway 280 in Sylacauga.

"If you look at the extent of Sgt. Allen's injuries and you take that along with looking at his patrol car, he's very fortunate to be here today…That we're having this conversation... Because the damage to the car was very severe," said Chief Zook.

The driver of the other car, Kevin Mackey, was also transported to UAB, but Mackey was not seriously injured.

State troopers are investigating the cause of the crash.
