The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Thursday, July 1, 2010:
Here's a voicemail from a Fox 6 viewer:
It's amazing you guys just put the worst stories, um the most depressing stories on your t.v. program, your news program and there is hardly anything positive. Please change that. I realize all the other stations do it too but for the love of God, we need more positive programming on that is coming in to my house and everyone else's house in Birmingham. And all I see is negativity. But, it's just you know we're in such a hard time right now.
The state of our economy
High rates of unemployment
Government budget problems
The spill in the Gulf
Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan
It does seem, sometimes, that newscasts are filled with nothing but bad news.
We do a lot of news every day and it's our job to cover the news of the day…good or bad.
At Fox 6, we try really hard to balance the tough news of the day with segments like "What's Right with our Schools", "Pass 6 On", and "Serving Others".
In our newscasts, we celebrate the good works and projects being done by individuals and organizations throughout our viewing area. We're always looking for good news to share… about job development, community growth, and folks achieving great things.
To this viewer who called…Thank you for calling and thank you for inviting us into your home each day. We'll continue to work hard to bring you balanced newscasts…with as much good news as we can find.
To all of our viewers, what DO you want from a newscast?
