BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) – Children's Hospital is working hard to inform parents about kids being exposed to oil while at the beach.
Dr. Erica Liebelt says oil from the spill can cause irritation or a rash. If left for longer periods of time, it can cause burns.
Liebelt adds that oil is more easily absorbed in children's bodies since they have thinner skin than an adult.
Respiratory problems can be expected from children who are exposed to the fumes from the oil, especially children with asthma or other respiratory diseases.
Liebelt says that parents should carefully monitor beach conditions to keep children from being exposed. Should a child get oil on his her skin, it should be washed off immediately with soap and water. No solvents or harsh chemicals or cleaners are necessary and should not be used.
