Pelham and Alabaster plan to ease traffic congestion

PELHAM, AL (WBRC) - The mayors of Pelham and Alabaster are looking for a new plan to relieve traffic congestion.

One plan would designate an HOV or carpool lane on I-65 from Alabaster to Birmingham.

The two mayors are also looking at installing four new bus stops on Highway 31.

Both mayors agree the traffic problem will only continue to get worse in the years ahead, unless they do something about it.

"I think it is looking forward to what our needs are on 65 and 31 (in) Pelham and Alabaster," says Pelham Mayor Don Murphy.

"I just think we need to be innovative, we need to be positive and open minded, that is the biggest thing," says Alabaster Mayor David Frings. "Sometimes we aren't open minded to what might work."

The mayors say the hard part may be trying to convince people to carpool or park their cars and ride the bus.

They say these plans are very preliminary and they do not know how much it will cost or have a timetable for when the project will move forward.
