JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - The Republican recount for governor has been the topic of discussion for the past few days, but it is officially underway in Jefferson County.
The official recount began about 7:00 on Tuesday morning in Tarrant. The Sheriff's Department got started around 6:00 a.m. unloading all the boxes of ballots.
About 30 volunteers are busy separating the Republican and Democratic ballots and then re-running the Republican ballots through the machines.
It is a tightly secured process. Deputies are the only ones allowed to bring the ballot boxes to workers, and then immediately lock them into a truck.
So far, only a few differences in counts have been found, but officials say those miscounts could be due to some of the machines jamming. They have replaced those with other machines, and are continuing on.
The Jefferson County recount is expected to be finished tonight.
