New information released on van der Sloot's U.S. charges

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Authorities are now releasing more information on the extortion charges against Joran van der Sloot.

Two law enforcement officials say van der Sloot reached out to Natalee Holloway's mother. They say, about six weeks ago, he contacted Beth Holloway asking for $250,000 in exchange for information about where Holloway's body is in Aruba.
The FBI set up a sting operation and paid van der Sloot $15,000 with private money. Sources say authorities were holding off on arresting van der Sloot while trying to build a murder case against him in Holloway's disappearance five years ago.
It was during that delay, officials say van der Sloot killed a Peruvian woman.
