BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Norfolk Southern Railroad Company is pushing for safety along the tracks.
On Tuesday, the company partnered with Operation Life Saver to distribute safety information in Birmingham.
Many people do not realize the rail company owns about 25 feet of area to the side of tracks, so walking alongside is trespassing.
Norfolk Southern is focusing efforts on the stretch from 50th Street South to 17th Street Southwest.
"Last year, I think the numbers were, we had 77 contacts," says Bobby Bland with Norfolk Southern. "And contacts are divided up into injuries and fatalities. For sure, I know we had about 3 or 4 fatalities in this location."
This is a two-day safety campaign. On Wednesday, law enforcement officials will be patrolling the tracks and issuing citations.
