BESSEMER, AL (WBRC) - City leaders in Bessemer could vote to annex a portion of Jefferson County currently targeted for a new railroad hub.
On Thursday morning, the Bessemer City Council is holding a special meeting. The agenda includes the proposed annexation of several hundred acres of land in McCalla.
People who live in that community are already moving to turn McCalla into its own city. They want to incorporate to have their say in the planned Norfolk Southern railroad hub.
A spokesperson for McCalla Matters says Bessemer's annexation plans could be an attempt to stop the incorporation effort.
