Bessemer church hit hard by overnight thieves

BESSEMER, AL (WBRC) - Crooks have stolen everything they could carry from a church in Bessemer.

The burglars spent a lot of time in the Morning Star United Methodist Church on 15th Street North, even leaving behind cigarette butts from the smoke breaks they took in the sanctuary.

The pastor of Morning Star United Methodist says the thieves broke into his church at around 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

Every other week, the pastor and his congregation meet at the church to pray at that same time, but he is thankful this was their off week.

With no one at the church, the thieves were able to steal tons of equipment including a guitar, bass, a 72-inch television, radio, a projector and some tools.

This is not the first time the church has had problems.  About two years ago someone damaged their air conditioning unit, but the pastor says this is the worst thing anyone has ever done here.

The pastor says he believes the people were in need and his church would have helped if only they had asked.
