Crime down across U.S., Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Crime in the U.S. continues to drop. The FBI says property crime and violent offenses went down about five% last year. That is the third straight year with a decrease and challenges the conventional wisdom that crime goes up when the economy goes down.

In the Birmingham-metro area, crime is down compared with last year, but Birmingham is still ranked as one of the worst cities in the country regarding crime.

According to the FBI, the Magic City is 9th in the country for homicides per capita. New Orleans is number one.

Birmingham was 19th in the nation for violent crimes last year and fifth in overall property crime.
