Authorities enforcing safety on land and water for Memorial Day

MONTGOMERY, AL (WBRC) - Alabama State troopers are increasing patrols ahead of Memorial Day.

It is the latest Take Back Our Highways campaign. Troopers say the emphasis this time is putting on your seatbelt.

"This memorial day we will be enforcing the state child restraint and seat belt laws," says Trooper Charles Dysart. "We will be doing this through the program 'Click it or Ticket'."

The official Memorial Day holiday travel period begins at six Friday evening and ends at midnight Monday.

The increased patrols will run through Memorial Day.

The campaign will not just be on land, but on water, too.

There will be more patrols this coming weekend on Lake Logan Martin. In Pell City, marine police say they will help boaters to make sure they're properly and safely outfitted. They will also be keeping an eye on homes located on the lake after a number of complaints of theft.

Pell City's new marine police unit says increased patrols have helped cut the number of thefts dramatically
